I love traveling with my little guy, Chiko. He is a very sweet dog and is much admired for his ability to charm even the most ardent of Chihuahua critics. He’s a wonderful travel companion and traveler. He hates when I leave him home and broads for a day or two before he allows himself to enjoy the comfort of all the attention he recovers from family and friends. So, if I can I bring him with me, I do.

I have been refining my approach to canine travel, especially since I travel with my dog and not my cat. Assam would be highly displease at a change in her routine and is highly indigent when it comes to a pet carrier or outdoor time. Chicko, on the other hand acts like he has won the lottery. He literally bounces off the walls. I have tote that I use to carry his gear and yes, I even have a small stroller for him, and, yes, I am made fun of because of it. It is the easiest way to transport him in comfort along with his tote. I also d my research to ensure that he can stay with me in whatever accommodations I choose and that he can hang out with me on adventures and when dining.

When traveling with your pet, it’s important to consider their comfort and safety. Here are some tips for a successful trip with your furry friend:

  1. Plan ahead: Research pet-friendly accommodations, restaurants, and attractions at your destination. Make sure to book accommodations that allow pets in advance.
  2. Pack essentials: Bring your pet‘s food, water, bowls, leash, collar with identification tags, waste bags, and any necessary medications. Also, pack their favorite toys or blankets to provide a sense of familiarity.
  3. Visit the vet: Schedule a visit to the vet before your trip to ensure your pet is up to date on vaccinations and in good health. Obtain a copy of their medical records and any necessary travel documents.
  4. Secure transportation: Use a secure pet carrier or harness to keep your pet safe during car rides or flights. Ensure they are comfortable and have enough space to move around.
  5. Take breaks: During long car rides, make frequent stops to allow your pet to stretch their legs, use the bathroom, and have some water. This will help them stay comfortable and reduce anxiety.
  6. Be mindful of the weather: Avoid leaving your pet in a hot car or exposing them to extreme temperatures. Ensure they have access to shade and water at all times.
  7. Follow pet etiquette: Respect the rules and regulations of pet-friendly establishments. Keep your pet on a leash, clean up after them, and be mindful of other guests.
  8. Be prepared for emergencies: Research nearby veterinary clinics or pet hospitals at your destination in case of any emergencies or unexpected health issues.

When traveling with your pet, it’s important to have the right gear to ensure their comfort and safety. I find that trial and error is sometimes the best indicator of what works for us. I also have to consider the location, length of time spend away, and how we are traveling. We have exclusively traveled by car. Here are some essential travel pet gear items to consider:

  1. Pet carrier: A sturdy and secure pet carrier is essential for traveling with small pets. Look for one that is airline-approved if you plan to fly. Make sure it has proper ventilation, a comfortable interior, and is the appropriate size for your pet.
  2. Collapsible travel bowls: These bowls are lightweight and easy to pack. They can be used for food and water on the go. Look for ones that are durable and easy to clean.
  3. Travel water bottle: A portable water bottle with a built-in dispenser is handy for providing your pet with water during walks or car rides. Look for one that is leak-proof and has a bowl attachment.
  4. Travel bed or blanket: Bringing along a familiar bed or blanket can provide comfort and familiarity for your pet in unfamiliar surroundings. Look for one that is lightweight and easy to pack.
  5. Seat belt or harness: If your pet will be traveling in the car, a seat belt or harness can help keep them secure and prevent distractions. Look for one that is adjustable and comfortable for your pet.
  6. Medical Information and Insurance: Have a list of any medication and supplements your dog may be taking along with the name and phone number of your hometown vet. Also, have a copy of you pet‘s vaccinations nd rabies shots. If you have pet insurance, make sure you have a copy of that information, also.
  7. Pet first aid kit: It’s always a good idea to have a first aid kit specifically for your pet. Include items such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and any necessary medications.
  8. ID tags and microchip: Ensure your pet has proper identification with up-to-date contact information. Consider getting them microchipped as an added precaution.

Remember to research and comply with any specific travel regulations or requirements for your destination. If you are traveling outside of your home country, make sure you have the required paperwork and documents for ease of border crossing. Additionally, always prioritize your pet‘s comfort and safety when selecting travel gear and remember you may need to tailor that gear to a particular activity.

If you’re planning to engage in water sports with your pet, there are a few additional items you may want to consider:

  1. Dog life jacket: A dog life jacket is essential for water sports to ensure your pet‘s safety. Look for one that is buoyant, adjustable, and has a handle on the back for easy lifting.
  2. Waterproof leash: A waterproof leash is ideal for water sports as it won’t get waterlogged or damaged. Look for one that is durable and has a comfortable grip.
  3. Floating toys: Bring along some floating toys for your pet to enjoy in the water. Look for toys that are specifically designed for water play and are easy to spot in the water.
  4. Paw protection: If you’ll be engaging in water sports in areas with rough or hot surfaces, consider using paw protection for your pet. Booties or paw wax can help protect their paws from cuts, abrasions, and hot surfaces.
  5. Sun protection: Just like humans, pets can get sunburned. Consider using pet-safe sunscreen on areas of your pet‘s body that are exposed to the sun, such as their nose, ears, and belly.
  6. Freshwater supply: Make sure to bring along plenty of fresh water for your pet to drink and stay hydrated during water sports activities. Consider using a portable water bottle with a built-in dispenser.
  7. Towel: A quick-drying towel is essential for drying off your pet after water sports. Look for one that is absorbent and lightweight for easy packing.

Remember to introduce your pet to water gradually and ensure they are comfortable and confident in the water before engaging in water sports activities. Always prioritize their safety and well-being during any water-related activities.

Hiking with your pet can be a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors together. Here are some tips for a great pet hiking experience:

  1. Choose pet-friendly trails: Look for hiking trails that allow pets and are suitable for their abilities. Consider the length, difficulty level, and terrain of the trail to ensure it is appropriate for your pet.
  2. Check leash regulations: Some hiking trails require pets to be on a leash at all times. Make sure to comply with any leash regulations and keep your pet under control to ensure the safety of wildlife, other hikers, and your pet.
  3. Pack essentials: Bring plenty of water for both you and your pet, as well as collapsible bowls for drinking. Pack some snacks or treats for your pet, as well as waste bags to clean up after them. Consider bringing a pet first aid kit in case of any injuries.
  4. Protect against ticks and fleas: Apply a tick and flea preventative treatment to your pet before the hike. Check them for ticks after the hike and remove any you find promptly.
  5. Protect their paws: Consider using paw protection for your pet, especially if the trail has rough or hot surfaces. Booties or paw wax can help protect their paws from cuts, abrasions, and hot surfaces.
  6. Start slow and build up endurance: If your pet is not used to hiking, start with shorter and easier trails and gradually increase the distance and difficulty level. This will help build their endurance and prevent overexertion.
  7. Be mindful of their limitations: Pay attention to your pet‘s behavior and energy levels during the hike. Take breaks as needed and watch for signs of fatigue or discomfort. Adjust your pace and distance accordingly.
  8. Respect wildlife and other hikers: Keep your pet under control and avoid disturbing wildlife or other hikers. Be mindful of any trail etiquette rules and always clean up after your pet.

Remember to consult with your veterinarian before taking your pet on a hike, especially if they have any health conditions or are not used to strenuous physical activity. With proper preparation and consideration, hiking with your pet can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both of you.

Traveling outside of the US with your dog requires careful planning and preparation. Here are the steps to follow:

Research destination requirements: Start by researching the specific requirements and regulations of the country you plan to visit. Each country has different rules regarding pet importation, quarantine, vaccinations, and documentation. Check the official government websites or contact the embassy or consulate of the destination country for accurate and up-to-date information.

  1. Visit the veterinarian: Schedule a visit to your veterinarian well in advance of your trip. Ensure your dog is in good health and up to date on all necessary vaccinations. Your vet can also provide guidance on any additional vaccinations or treatments required for travel to the specific country.
  2. Microchip your dog: Many countries require dogs to be microchipped for identification purposes. Ensure your dog has a microchip implanted, and make sure it is registered with your contact information.
  3. Obtain necessary documentation: Obtain the required documentation for your dog’s travel. This may include a pet passport, health certificate, vaccination records, and any other specific forms or permits required by the destination country. Your veterinarian can assist you in obtaining these documents.
  4. Research transportation options: Research the available transportation options for traveling with your dog. Depending on the destination, you may choose to travel by air, sea, or land. Each mode of transportation has its own regulations and requirements for traveling with pets. Contact the airline, cruise line, or transportation provider to understand their specific pet policies and make necessary arrangements.
  5. Prepare a travel kit: Assemble a travel kit for your dog, including essentials such as food, water, medications, leash, collar, ID tags, bedding, and any other items your dog may need during the journey. It’s also a good idea to pack familiar toys or blankets to provide comfort and reduce anxiety.
  6. Plan for quarantine or isolation: Some countries require a period of quarantine or isolation upon arrival. Research and plan for this possibility, ensuring you have accommodations and arrangements in place for your dog during this period.
  7. Prepare for the return journey: Keep in mind that you will need to fulfill the requirements for re-entry into the US as well. Research the necessary documentation and procedures for bringing your dog back home.
  8. Consider professional assistance: If the process seems overwhelming or you are unsure about the requirements, consider hiring a professional pet relocation service. They can guide you through the entire process, ensuring compliance with all regulations and making the journey smoother for you and your dog.

Remember to start the planning process well in advance, as some countries have lengthy procedures and waiting periods.
