Exploring Off-Grid: Unleashing the Freedom of RVs and Sailboats for Travel

I enjoy putting technology away. There are times that I just want to grab a book and sit and read while soaking in some local scenery. It’s about letting my mind heal and generate new ideas, thoughts, and visions. This provides the opportunity to nurture my creativity. I see and experience new things and am able to bring all that home to be part of my world.  Going off grid is important to me.

There are so many options for off grid travel. These options give travelers the opportunity to regenerate, build relationships, and relax. Here are some options, but I want to concentrate on van/rv and sailing in this article. Here are some options:

• Camping: Pitching a tent and camping in the wilderness or at designated campsites is a popular off-grid travel option. It allows you to immerse yourself in nature and disconnect from the modern world.
• Van life/RVing: Converting a van or RV into a mobile home is a trendy off-grid travel option. It provides the freedom to travel wherever you want while having basic amenities like a bed, kitchen, and bathroom on board.
• Backpacking: Backpacking involves carrying all your essentials in a backpack and exploring remote areas on foot. It allows you to venture off-grid and discover hidden gems that are inaccessible by vehicles.
• Sailing: Sailing off-grid allows you to explore remote islands, coastlines, and even cross oceans. You can live on a sailboat, harnessing wind power and disconnecting from the grid while enjoying the freedom of the open sea.
• Bike touring: Traveling long distances on a bicycle is an eco-friendly and off-grid travel option. You can explore scenic routes, camp along the way, and have a more immersive experience with the local culture and environment.
• Hiking: Going on multi-day hikes or thru-hiking famous trails like the Appalachian Trail or Pacific Crest Trail allows you to disconnect from civilization and experience the beauty of nature firsthand.
• homestays: Opting for homestays in remote villages or rural areas allows you to experience local culture, traditions, and a simpler way of life. It often involves staying with local families and participating in their daily activities.

Two of the options than can lead you to camping, backpacking, bike touring, hiking homestays, house-siting, wildlife conservation volunteering, and stays in remote eco-lodges are sailing, RVing, and travel vanning. These gete to where you want to go, depending upon where you want to, while touring spots along the way.

Renting an RV or travel van is a popular option for off-grid travel. It allows for the opportunity to experience RV life before purchasing one. Covid created a market for RVs and remote work, however, I am seeing an increase of RVs available for purchase. RVing is not for everyone and the myriad of options can be overwhelming, renting may be a way of helping making the decision of what is right for you.
