While spending some time in the Poconos over Labor day weekend, we took a detour to Lake Mohawk in New Jersey.  I found Lake Mohawk while doing some travel research into the area.  What drew me to visiting was the charming swiss architecture and the beauty of the area.  We spent an afternoon with our pups touring this beautiful area.  I was not disappointed.

Lake Mohawk is a beautiful lake located in the northern part of New Jersey. It is situated in Sussex County and is one of the largest privately owned lakes in the state. The lake was initially created in the early 20th century by a dam constructed on the Wallkill River.

Lake Mohawk is a popular recreational destination, offering residents and visitors a wide range of activities to enjoy. The lake itself spans over 2,000 acres, providing ample space for boating, fishing, and swimming. The lake is well stocked with various fish species, including bass, trout, and catfish, making it a haven for fishing enthusiasts.

Surrounding the lake is the Lake Mohawk Country Club, which was established in 1927 and offers its members access to amenities such as golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts, and a beach area. Many residents also enjoy taking leisurely walks or bike rides along the lake’s scenic shoreline.

In addition to the recreational opportunities, Lake Mohawk features a charming village called Lake Mohawk Plaza. It is a picturesque, European-style shopping center with a variety of restaurants, boutique stores, and services. The community around the lake is known for its distinctive architectural style, showcasing Tudor-style homes and lush landscaping.

Lake Mohawk is a wonderful destination that combines natural beauty with a vibrant community. It attracts tourists looking for a serene escape from city life while still offering plenty of recreational and social options.

The public is typically allowed to use certain parts of Lake Mohawk in New Jersey. However, the exact access and usage rights may vary depending on specific areas and community regulations. It is recommended to check with local authorities or the Lake Mohawk Country Club, which manages the lake, for any specific rules or restrictions that may be in place for public usage.

As of July 2021, the travel requirements for US citizens traveling to Cuba are as follows:

  1. General License: US citizens can travel to Cuba under one of the 12 categories of authorized travel without obtaining a specific license. These categories include family visits, educational activities, professional research, journalistic activities, humanitarian projects, and more. It is important to ensure that your travel falls under one of these categories.
  2. Health Insurance: All US travelers to Cuba are required to have non-US-based health insurance that covers medical expenses in Cuba. This can be obtained through a travel insurance provider or by purchasing a Cuban health insurance policy upon arrival in Cuba.
  3. Tourist Card: US citizens traveling to Cuba need to obtain a tourist card, also known as a visa card. This can be obtained through the airline or travel agency you are using to travel to Cuba. The tourist card allows for a stay of up to 30 days and can be extended for an additional 30 days while in Cuba.

It is important to note that travel restrictions and requirements can change, so it is recommended to check the latest information from the US Department of State or consult with a travel agency specializing in travel to Cuba before planning your trip.

THE CUBAN TOURIST CARD

Travel to Cuba as an American requires a Cuban Tourist Card (the equivalent of a visa). This can be ordered in advance and they do overnight shipping. Or you can get it right at the gate, with the “Cuba Ready” tourist card stand popping up an hour before boarding. I traveled with American Airlines to Cuba and paid $100 for the visa at my gate. It took less than 5 minutes since I had a “Cuba Ready” green sticker on my ticket from showing all the required documents at check-in. No joke, this was the easiest visa process I’ve ever been through and you don’t need extra time at the airport to get your visa. Flights from the USA receive a pink visa that you will fill out yourself.

The tourist card is what is stamped upon arrival and you must keep the two tourist visas with you at all times since this is what is collected upon departure. The best way to figure out your visa needs is through the airlines’ website. DO NOT call an airline call center about the Cuban visa due to misinformation.  See the following carriers’ websites for accurate details on purchasing your visa:

✈️ American Airlines

✈️ jetBlue

✈️ Southwest Airlines

✈️ United

✈️ Delta

Entry Requirements

Travel to Cuba for tourist activities remains prohibited by statute. However, the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has issued general licenses for 12 categories of travel. Individuals who meet the regulatory conditions of the general license they seek to travel under do not need to apply for an additional license from OFAC to travel to Cuba. The 12 categories of authorized travel to Cuba are: family visits; official business of the U.S. government, foreign governments, and certain intergovernmental organizations; journalistic activity; professional research and professional meetings; educational activities; religious activities; public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions, and exhibitions; support for the Cuban people; humanitarian projects; activities of private foundations or research or educational institutes; exportation, importation, or transmission of information or informational materials; and certain authorized export transactions.

For details on Cuba sanctions regulations, including fact sheets on recent changes and information about applying for an OFAC license, please visit this Department of Treasury webpage on Cuba sanctions. The Department of State also provides information on Cuba sanctions and travel restrictions on its webpage on Cuba sanctions.

In accordance with the National Security Presidential Memorandum on Strengthening the Policy of the United States Toward Cuba of June 2017, the State Department also publishes a list of entities and subentities that are under the control of, or act for or on behalf of, the Cuban military, intelligence, or security services or personnel and with which direct financial transactions would disproportionately benefit the Cuban military, intelligence, or security services or personnel at the expense of the Cuban people or private enterprise in Cuba – the State Department’s List of Restricted Entities and Subentities Associated with Cuba (“Cuba Restricted List”). Persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction will now be prohibited from engaging in certain direct financial transactions with entities and subentities identified by the State Department on the Cuba Restricted List. Certain transactions will be excluded from this prohibition pursuant to exceptions detailed in the NSPM.

Tik Tok Travel Trends for Today’s Traveler

Advertisements

I enjoy Tik Tok because I can get quick clips of tutorials and ideas.  It’s an easy way to spark my creativity.  I love TikTokers like Jeff Mackay, Navagepatch,  The Traveling Textbook, Our Beautiful World, and Travel for Nerds.  The expose

According to Moneywise “The ‘travel’ hashtag on TikTok has almost 119 billion views with thousands of videos showcasing beautiful montages of overseas destinations.”  This what Titokers put out there

  1. Travel Hacks: TikTok users love sharing their travel hacks, which include tips for packing efficiently, finding cheap flights, scoring hotel upgrades, and navigating popular tourist destinations.
  2. Destination Guides: Many creators on TikTok create destination guides, showcasing the highlights, hidden gems, and must-visit spots in specific cities or countries. These videos often feature stunning visuals, local food recommendations, and unique experiences.
  3. Adventure Travel: TikTok has become a hub for adventure travel enthusiasts. You can find videos featuring thrilling activities such as hiking, skydiving, scuba diving, and other adrenaline-pumping adventures from around the world.
  4. Aesthetic Travel vlogs: Visual appeal is essential on TikTok, and many users create aesthetically pleasing travel vlogs. These videos often have well-curated shots, beautiful scenery, and catchy editing styles, offering a virtual journey for viewers.
  5. Travel Challenges: TikTok challenges are quite popular, and there have been travel-related challenges as well. These challenges range from dancing in iconic locations to showcasing specific travel-themed skills or activities.
  6. Food and Culinary Experiences: Food is a significant part of travel, and TikTok users love sharing their culinary experiences. From street food adventures to trying unique regional dishes, food-related content is widely shared on the platform.

According to Travel Daily Media,

1. Create an Instagrammable flight timelapse – 3.5 million TikTok likes
2. Utilize multi-carry luggage – 2.6 million TikTok likes
3. Claim money from being bumped- 1.7 million TikTok likes
4. Use your travel pillow for extra storage – 1.3 million TikTok likes
5. Source a suitcase approved by pilots – 1.3 million TikTok likes
6. Pack a pot noodle – 940,000 TikTok likes
7. Track flights in real-time – 830,000 TikTok likes
8. Buy points to get cheaper flights – 220,000 TikTok likes
9. Consider house-sitting – 220,000 TikTok likes
Should you have access to a window on your next flight, you could create a stunning timelapse of your journey thanks to this TikTok hack. Simply set your mobile to record a timelapse and secure it between the window and the blind to capture stunning views as you fly above the clouds. Remember, though, that it is CAA regulation to have blinds up during take-off and landing.
The next travel hack is simple yet effective. If you are traveling with children, there are a number of different luggage cases on the market designed to double up as seating for a young child. These include cases from MiaMily and Trunki. Your youngster can sit on the case and roll alongside you, saving you the effort of carrying them in your arms alongside managing all your luggage. These types of cases are also small and lightweight, which makes them eligible as a carry-on for most airlines.
In recent months, seat bumping has become a huge topic of conversation on TikTok, with the hashtag ‘overbooked flight’ accumulating over 20 million views.  Airlines will often strategically overbook plane seats to compensate for losses caused by passengers who may cancel at the last minute, miss a check-in, or simply not turn up. However, there are times when such plans fail and airlines are consequently faced with a surplus of passengers. The duty then falls upon the airline to determine who is bumped from their seat.
Primarily, passengers will be asked to voluntarily give up their seats, often in return for compensation. If there are not enough volunteers, the airline must decide which passengers to bump. Commonly, passengers that are bumped first are those that checked in the latest or did not pre-pay for an assigned seat. If you are seat bumped involuntarily the airline must also compensate you, something that many TikTok users were not previously aware of.
Additional luggage can often be expensive on many airlines, however, these same airlines typically won’t think twice about letting you board with a travel pillow. TikTok’ers have jumped on this and have started filling their pillows with additional luggage, meaning they can get extra luggage on their holiday without paying for more baggage. Today, the “pillow hack” is one of the most-searched travel trends on TikTok, with the hashtag amassing over 38.3 million views.
Shopping experts on TikTok have identified the suitcase that is seemingly loved by pilots across the world. With pilots continuously on the move, they require reliable and durable suitcases, and cases from Luggageworks are said to be the perfect fit.  An additional benefit is that offer luggage repair but at a pretty hefty price.  The repairs if not itemized begin at $199.00.
The nifty cases are designed to fit in all aircraft and they have numerous useful features, including a sturdy frame and a durable ballistic nylon cover. Despite being a firm favorite among pilots, savvy TikTokers have found that you don’t need a referral code or industry ID to buy them – anyone can pick one up.  However, you might want to think twice before investing in one of these cases, as they come with a hefty price tag.  Rolling bags are over $400.00.
If you want to enjoy a hot meal but aren’t so keen on the options offered by your airline, this next trending hack could be for you. The next time you fly, why not consider bringing aboard a pot of instant noodles? These are super cheap but are full of flavor, and if you ask nicely, your flight attendant will fill it up with boiling water for you. Alternatively, TikTokers have recommended purchasing a cup of boiling water from the airport in preparation for boarding.
iPhone users have a nifty trick up their sleeves when it comes to air travel. To try this one for yourself all you need is your airline name and flight number. Send these details in an iMessage to anyone in your contacts and let them track your flight. If the flight is active, the receiver will see a real-time tracking map.  By selecting “Preview Flight” the receiver will also be able to see your flights on-time status, departure and arrival times, duration, and gate and baggage claim information.
This is great for when you’re meeting someone on the other end, or giving family and friends peace of mind if you’re a frequent flier. Plus, it’s also pretty cool to track flights when you know someone aboard.
Air miles are reward points you can collect by traveling frequently with specific airlines. Air miles can be redeemed for flight upgrades or even free flights. What you might not know, however, is that you can actually buy more air miles. TikTokers have claimed that, in theory, buying enough points to warrant a free flight could be cheaper than purchasing that flight directly. For example, a £500 business class flight could be redeemable for free if you had 70,000 air miles. However, purchasing 70,000 air miles might only cost you £300, saving you £200 (about $.
Hotels and Airbnbs are often one of the most expensive parts of a holiday. But if you’re open to trying something different and inexpensive, why not consider ditching the hotels and house-sitting on your next trip? Thanks to TikTok, house-sitting is growing in popularity for 2023. And, today there are several websites that offer safe and reliable house-sitting services, including TrustedHousesitters.com, HouseSittersAmerica.com, and MindMyHouse.com, to name a few.
These sites offer house-sitting services in destinations all around the world. Whilst many of these sites require a subscription fee, it can still be much cheaper than alternative accommodation if you are looking to travel frequently. The best part is you get to experience a totally local and authentic living situation that the majority of tourists will never get.
I must admit that I have learned some useful information.  My advice is to be careful and do your research.  Sometimes the tips are based on hearsay and may cause some issues, so look the information up on trusted sites and verify the hint, tip, or hack!

Wanderlust Deliberations: How I Choose My Next Travel Destination

Advertisements

I often stuggle with where I want to go next.  There is a whole world out there.  What do I want to see, how much time should I give it, who do I want to travel with, and how much do I want to spend.  So deciding where your next trip should involve the consideation of various factors and personal preferences. Here are some steps to help you make the decision:

  1. Define Your Travel Goals: Determine what you want to get out of your trip. Are you looking for relaxation, adventure, cultural experiences, or something else? Clarifying your travel goals will help narrow down your options.
  2. Consider Your Budget: Assess how much you are willing to spend on your trip. Different destinations have varying costs for accommodation, food, activities, and transportation. Ensure your budget aligns with your chosen destination.
  3. Evaluate the Time Available: Consider the duration of your trip and how much time you can afford to spend traveling. Some destinations may require more time to explore fully, while others can be enjoyed in a shorter timeframe.
  4. Explore Your Interests: Think about your interests and hobbies. Whether you love history, nature, art, food, or adventure, choose a destination that offers activities and experiences that align with your passions.
  5. Check Travel Restrictions and Safety: Research the current travel restrictions, entry requirements, and health advisories for potential destinations. Ensure that your chosen location is safe and feasible to visit given the current global situation.
  6. Consider the Season: Consider the time of year you plan to travel and how it aligns with the weather and climate of different destinations. Decide if you prefer a summer beach destination, a winter ski resort, or a springtime blossom-filled city.
  7. Consult Travel Guides and Reviews: Consult travel guides, websites, and online reviews to gather insights from other travelers about destinations you are considering. Pay attention to what others enjoyed and what challenges they encountered.
  8. Go with Your Gut: Sometimes, the best decision is to follow your instincts. If a particular destination has been calling to you or feels like the right choice, trust your intuition.
  9. Consider Past Travel Experiences: Reflect on your previous travel experiences. Are there certain types of destinations you enjoyed more than others? Use past experiences as a guide for future trip planning.
  10. Be Open to New Experiences: If you’re torn between a few options, consider trying something completely new. Embrace the adventure of exploring a destination you’ve never considered before.

Remember that the decision-making process should be enjoyable and part of the excitement of travel. Take your time to research, weigh the pros and cons, and select a destination that resonates with you and promises an unforgettable experience.  But, most importantly, enjoy looking and be inspired.

Finding travel inspiration can come from various sources that ignite your wanderlust and curiosity. Here are some of the best places to find travel inspiration:

  1. Travel Blogs and Websites: Read travel blogs and websites dedicated to sharing personal travel experiences, destination guides, and tips. Many bloggers provide stunning photos and detailed accounts of their adventures.
  2. Social Media: Follow travel influencers, photographers, and travel-related accounts on platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter. You’ll discover breathtaking travel photos and destination ideas.
  3. Travel Magazines and Books: Subscribe to travel magazines or read travel-related books that feature articles on different destinations, cultures, and travel experiences.
  4. Online Travel Forums: Participate in travel forums like TripAdvisor or Reddit’s travel subreddit. These platforms are great for getting advice from experienced travelers and sharing your travel ideas with others.
  5. YouTube Travel Channels: Watch travel vloggers who document their journeys in captivating video formats. You can virtually explore various places and get a sense of what it’s like to visit those destinations.
  6. Travel Shows and Documentaries: Watch travel shows and documentaries on TV or streaming platforms. Channels like National Geographic and Netflix offer many travel-related programs.
  7. Destination Websites: Explore the official tourism websites of countries, cities, or regions you’re interested in visiting. They often showcase highlights, attractions, and upcoming events.
  8. Travel Apps: Use travel apps like TripAdvisor, Lonely Planet, or Airbnb Experiences to discover popular destinations, activities, and experiences recommended by other travelers.
  9. Photo Sharing Platforms: Explore photo-sharing platforms like Flickr or 500px to see stunning travel photography taken by amateur and professional photographers.
  10. Local Travel Agencies: Visit local travel agencies and browse their brochures and travel packages. Even if you don’t book through them, the materials may spark travel ideas.
  11. Friends and Family: Talk to friends, family, and colleagues about their travel experiences and recommendations. Personal stories can be a valuable source of inspiration.
  12. Google Earth and Maps: Explore Google Earth to virtually “fly” over destinations and see satellite images. Google Maps’ Street View can give you a sense of what it’s like to be in a particular location.

Remember that inspiration can strike unexpectedly, so stay open to new ideas and remain curious about the world. Whether you find inspiration through digital platforms or offline sources, the key is to let your interests and passions guide you toward your next adventure.

There are several TikTokers that are excellent.  Just be aware that some influencers will display the best.  Some that I enjoy are:  Travel for Nerds, Liz Travel Tips/Digital Nomad, Look Up London, Abandoned Scotland, Billy/PA Travel Vlogger, Destination Inspiration, and  destination.gettysburg.  A lot of these influencers have YouTube and Instagram channels.

I also enjoy talking to others about travel.  It is amazing how often I am approached.  I was at a baby shower and the SO daughter’s MIL, jumped in the chair next to me and asked “Have you been on a river cruise?”  And so began the travel discussion.  I love to pick people’s brains, especially if I know them.  It gives me a real glimps into what I might be getting into to.

I also love travel magazines and book!  Oh, how I love ro read.  One of my favorite travel writers is Joe Yogerst.

Joe Yogerst is a travel writer and author who has written several books on various travel-related topics. Some of his notable books include:

  1. “100 Parks, 5,000 Ideas: Where to Go, When to Go, What to See, What to Do”: This book provides recommendations for visiting 100 of America’s most beautiful national parks, along with travel tips and suggested activities.
  2. “National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of Canada”: In this book, Joe Yogerst explores the stunning national parks of Canada, offering insights into their natural beauty, wildlife, and recreational opportunities.
  3. “50 States, 5,000 Ideas: Where to Go, When to Go, What to See, What to Do”: This book is a comprehensive guide to exploring the diverse attractions and landmarks across all 50 states of the United States.
  4. “50 States of Adventure: The Best Kid-Friendly Destinations in America”: Geared towards family travel, this book presents a collection of kid-friendly destinations and activities in the United States.
  5. “Madagascar Wildlife: A Visitor’s Guide”: Focused on the unique wildlife of Madagascar, this guidebook provides information on the island’s diverse flora and fauna, including its famous lemurs and other endemic species.

The book that I draw a lot of inspiration from, as of late, is 100 Drives, 5,000 Ideas: Where to Go, When to Go, What to Do, What to See by Yogerst (2020). The description on Amazon is:

Buckle up for the road trip of a lifetime: 100 epic journeys through all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces offering thousands of sites and roadside attractions along the way. A sequel to the best-selling 50 States, 5,000 Ideas.

From a vineyard route through Northwest wine country to a winter wonderland on Alberta’s Icefields Parkway, this informative travel guide offers epic sights, good bites, and pure fun. Pack your car and hit the road to experience 100 drives–both classic and off the beaten track–across the United States and Canada. You’ll find innovative itineraries outlining your route, along with when to go and what to see and do along the way. And there’s something here to satisfy every passenger. Take in the magnificent turns along Alaska’s Route One through Anchorage to Kenai. Or wind your way through retro spots from Chicago to Los Angeles on Route 66. On nearly 600 miles of New Mexico’s Trail of the Ancients, stop off to encounter sites dating back to A.D. 850. Or discover fossils along Dinosaur Drive, a route that winds its way from Calgary to Denver. Beach lovers will delight in Hawaii’s Oahu Circle Island Drive, while history lovers can follow Canada’s War of 1812 trail: a cruise between Montreal and Windsor with stops at major battlefields along the way.
Filled with expert tips, tons of activities, and plenty to see and do as you drive–the ultimate road trip playlist anyone?–here is an inspirational and practical keepsake for any road warrior.

I truly enjoy the layout of the book, the ideas, and details.  Two of my next trips will be from Philly to Maine through Long Island and from Philly to Knoville throught the Blue Ridge Parkway and then to Greensboro and back through DC.  The book has given me some ideas that will make the trip even better.  For example, there is Rapdian Camp in Big Meadows,Virigina, which was the summer white House for Herbet Hoover from 1929-1933.  A little know and unbeknowst to me Presidential site.  I am looking forward to visitng that site!

With the advent of the internet, there have been changes to help keep the travel agent industry alive. Overall, the travel agent industry has adapted to the changing needs and preferences of modern travelers by offering personalized services, leveraging technology, and promoting sustainable and experiential travel.

Here are a few notable changes in the travel agent industry:

  1. Online booking platforms: The rise of online travel agencies (OTAs) and direct booking options offered by airlines and hotels has made it easier for travelers to book their own trips. This has reduced the dependence on traditional travel agents for booking flights, accommodation, and other travel services.

  2. Customization and personalization: Travel agents now focus more on providing personalized services to cater to individual preferences and unique travel experiences. So, when one of the besties brought up that we should go, I thought why not? This friend is very health conscious, and is actually a pescatarian. I’m the one person she can rely on to be adventurous when it comes to vegan and vegetarian food. It was an incredibly beautiful day, and I truly enjoyed our time there.

We got there fairly early, so we really didn’t have to wait in line for a lot. As any food feels full, there were some foods that were better than others what I really appreciate it, or the vendors that really amped up the flavor, such as the Cajun and Chinese places. It was all about the flavor. I had a delightful bow with the most intense mushroom filling. I also had cauliflower Cajun bites that were truly out of this world. What I really didn’t care for, were the vegan mushroom jerky’s. I found them a little lacking in flavor.

I am not one of those people that turns up their mose at vegan food, because there is a place on the table for it, even if you are a meat eater. I enjoy learning about different techniques and ideas on how to elevate vegetables into something wonderful whether it’s a main dish or a side dish. I appreciate the chefs that have take the time to innovate and transform, the wat I cook or look at something.  I enjoy watching people transform some simple into something wonderful. We were on a transatlantic cruise and had downtime, so I chose to buy the Internet package and work. It was not exactly ideal. The conditions on the ocean were not conducive to having the best Internet connection. • Time Management: Balancing work commitments and leisure activities can be challenging. It can be difficult to find the right balance between attending meetings or conferences and taking time off to explore or relax. It requires careful planning and time management skills to ensure that both work and leisure activities are adequately addressed.

Despite these challenges, many people find that the benefits of bleisure travel outweigh the difficulties. With proper planning and organization, it is possible to have a successful and enjoyable bleisure trip.

I have also seen some benefit to bleisure travel.  Last April, I was in DC and was unable to reschedule a critical meeting.  I changed my travel to the night before and took the meeting first thing the next morning.  The hotel internet was excellent and I was able to  then head out for the rest of the day.  There are quiet a few benefits to bleisure travel.
