Exploring the Great Outdoors: Here is the New Update to the National Park Service Annual Pass”

Advertisements

The National Park Service Annual Pass, also known as the America the Beautiful Pass, is a special pass that grants access to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites across the United States. This pass covers entrance fees at national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, and other federal lands that charge fees for entry. The pass is valid for one year from the month of purchase and provides entry for the pass holder and accompanying passengers in a private vehicle, or up to three adults where entry fees are charged per person. It’s a great way to explore and enjoy the natural wonders and cultural heritage preserved by the National Park Service.

The Olympic National Park Annual Pass is specific to Olympic National Park in Washington state. This pass allows you to visit and enjoy the natural beauty of the park throughout the year. The cost of the Olympic National Park Annual Pass may vary, so it’s best to check with the park’s official website or contact the park directly for the most up-to-date information.  The Interagency Annual Pass offers broader access to various federal recreation sites, while the Olympic National Park Annual Pass specifically focuses on entry to Olympic National Park.

Due to individuals sharing the two different passes with others that do not have an annual pass, the National Park Service is implementing a new standardized pass as of January 1, 2024.  In order to protect the pass from misuse, the new pass will have only one signature line as opposed to two.  The two signature pass will continue to be sold until December 31, 2023.

The updated National Park Service annual pass will still grant the pass owner and all occupants in a personal vehicle access to sites that charge per vehicle. For sites that charge per person, the new pass will grant access to the pass owner and up to three additional adults. Children ages 15 or under are admitted free.

Travel Advisories: Staying Informed and Safe on Your Journey

Advertisements

While traveling is an exciting adventure, it’s important to prioritize safety. While designating the “most dangerous” places can vary depending on various factors, here are a few locations that have been considered potentially risky for travelers:

A Level 4 travel advisory is the highest level of travel alert issued by government authorities to advise against all travel to a specific country or region. It indicates a very high level of risk due to factors such as ongoing armed conflict, political instability, extreme weather conditions, or other potential dangers for travelers. Typically, Level 4 advisories suggest that individuals should not travel to the affected area unless it is absolutely necessary for essential reasons. It’s important for travelers to heed these advisories and consider alternative travel plans for their safety and well-being.  A few examples are:

  • Russia
  • Venezuela
  • Haiti

A Level Three travel advisory typically indicates a high level of caution and suggests reconsidering travel plans to a particular destination. It may be issued by government authorities or international organizations to inform travelers about potential risks or hazards in a specific location. These advisories are often put in place due to factors such as political unrest, natural disasters, health emergencies, or significant security concerns. It’s important to check the specific details of the advisory to understand the reasons behind it and make an informed decision about your travel plans.  A few examples are:

  • Honduras
  • El Salvador
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Egypt

A Level 2 travel advisory typically indicates a situation where travelers should exercise increased caution when visiting a particular destination. It suggests that there may be certain risks or safety concerns to be aware of, such as political unrest, natural disasters, or elevated crime rates in that area. While not as severe as a Level 3 or Level 4 advisory, a Level 2 advisory advises travelers to be cautious and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety while traveling. It’s always a good idea to check with your local government’s travel advisory or consult reputable sources before planning any trips.

  • Peru
  • Belize
  • Brazil
  • Sweden

A Level 1 travel advisory typically indicates that there are minimal or no significant safety or security risks associated with traveling to a particular destination. It suggests that travelers exercise normal precautions and remain vigilant as they would in any unfamiliar place. It is always a good idea to check with official government sources or travel advisories for the latest information specific to your destination, as levels may vary depending on the issuing country or organization.

  • Singapore
  • Austria
  • Greece
  • Iceland

Keep in mind that the situation in these places may change over time, so it’s essential to stay informed by checking travel advisories issued by your government and seeking updates from reliable sources before planning any travel.  You can obtain updated information from U.S. Department of State.

Unlocking Europe: The ETIAS Travel Authorization

Advertisements

The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is not a visa, but rather a travel authorization that will be required for travelers from visa-exempt countries visiting the Schengen Area in Europe. The Schengen Area is a group of 27 European countries that have abolished passport control at their mutual borders.

The European Union does not require visas from select countries, since they are categorized as third country nationals.  However, starting from 2022, travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and many others, will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before traveling to the Schengen Area. The ETIAS authorization will be valid for multiple entries and will allow travelers to stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

These countries include:

  • Albania
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Australia
  • Argentina
  • Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Brazil
  • Brunei
  • Canada
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Costa Rica
  • Dominica
  • El Salvador
  • Georgia
  • Grenada
  • Guatemala
  • Honduras
  • Hong Kong
  • Israel
  • Japan
  • Kiribati
  • Macau
  • Malaysia
  • Marshall Islands
  • Mauritius
  • Mexico
  • Micronesia
  • Moldava
  • Montenegro
  • New Zealand
  • Nicaragua
  • North Macedonia
  • Palau
  • Panama
  • Paraguay
  • Peru
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis
  • Saint Lucia
  • Saint Vincent and Grenadines
  • Samoa
  • Serbia
  • Seychelles
  • Singapore
  • Solomon Islands
  • South Korea
  • Taiwan
  • Timor Leste
  • Tonga
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Tuvalu
  • Ukraine
  • Uruguay
  • United Arab Emirate
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • Venezuela

To apply for an ETIAS authorization, travelers will need to complete an online application form, provide personal information, and pay a fee. The application will be processed electronically, and in most cases, the authorization will be granted within minutes. However, it is recommended to apply at least 72 hours before your intended travel date to allow for any potential delays or issues.

It’s important to note that the ETIAS authorization is not a guarantee of entry into the Schengen Area. Border control authorities will still have the final decision on whether to allow entry based on the traveler’s individual circumstances.

For more information and to apply for an ETIAS authorization, you can visit the official ETIAS website or consult with the embassy or consulate of the country you plan to visit in the Schengen Area.

The Schengen Area is a zone consisting of 27 European countries that have abolished passport control at their mutual borders. The area is named after the Schengen Agreement, which was signed in 1985 in the village of Schengen in Luxembourg.  These countries will require ETIAS approval to enter because they are passport-free zones. ETIAS approval of visa-free international travellers ensures they have been prescreened and deemed to pose no security risk.

Currently, these are the countries in the Schengen Area:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Croatia
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

The Schengen Agreement aimed to create a common area of free movement within Europe, allowing citizens of member countries to travel between them without the need for passport checks. This means that once you enter one Schengen country, you can travel freely within the entire Schengen Area without encountering border controls.

It’s important to note that while the Schengen Area allows for free movement within its borders, it does not necessarily mean that all member countries are part of the European Union (EU). Some countries, such as Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland, are part of the Schengen Area but not the EU, while others, such as Ireland and the United Kingdom, are part of the EU but not the Schengen Area.

When traveling to the Schengen Area, it’s important to check the specific entry requirements for each country, as visa requirements and other regulations may vary.

To apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), you will need the following:

  1. Valid Passport: You will need a valid passport from an eligible country. The passport should have at least three months of validity beyond your intended stay in the Schengen Area.
  2. Personal Information: You will need to provide personal information, including your full name, date of birth, nationality, and contact details.
  3. Travel Information: You will need to provide details about your intended travel, including the first Schengen country you plan to visit and your intended dates of arrival and departure.
  4. Background Information: You will need to answer questions related to your health, criminal history, and previous travel to conflict zones or areas of high security concern.
  5. Payment Method: You will need a valid credit or debit card to pay the ETIAS application fee. The fee is currently set at €7 for travelers aged 18 and above. Minors under the age of 18 are exempt from the fee.

The ETIAS application process is completed online through the official ETIAS website. Once you have gathered all the necessary information, you can fill out the application form and submit it electronically. In most cases, the authorization will be granted within minutes, but it is recommended to apply at least 72 hours before your intended travel date to allow for any potential delays or issues.

It’s important to note that the ETIAS authorization is linked to the passport used during the application process. Therefore, if you obtain a new passport after receiving your ETIAS authorization, you will need to update your information accordingly.

For more detailed information and to apply for an ETIAS authorization, you can visit the official ETIAS website or consult with the embassy or consulate of the country you plan to visit in the Schengen Area.

Chasing Darkness: Exploring The Path of Totality

Advertisements
NASA/MSFC/Joseph Matus

Recently, I was reading about different travel locations and I came across “The Path of Totality”. The brief Travel and Leisure synopsis had me curious, so, I indulged my curiosity and did more research.

The path of totality refers to the narrow strip on the Earth’s surface where a total solar eclipse can be observed. During a total solar eclipse, the Moon completely blocks the Sun, causing a temporary darkness in the area within the path of totality.

The path of totality is determined by the alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Since the Moon’s orbit around the Earth is slightly tilted, it does not always pass directly in front of the Sun during a solar eclipse. Instead, it usually passes above or below the Sun, creating a partial eclipse in most areas.

However, within the path of totality, the Moon’s shadow falls directly on the Earth’s surface, allowing observers to witness the rare and awe-inspiring event of a total solar eclipse. The path of totality is typically around 100 miles wide and can vary in length, ranging from a few dozen to a few hundred miles.

The path of totality for each solar eclipse is different and can cross different regions or countries. It is often a highly anticipated event, with people traveling to specific locations within the path to experience the complete darkness and the breathtaking sight of the Sun’s corona surrounding the Moon.

For example, the path of totality for the total solar eclipse that occurred on August 21, 2017, crossed the United States from the west coast to the east coast. It passed through states such as Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina.

To determine the exact path of totality for a specific solar eclipse, it is best to consult resources such as NASA’s website or other reputable sources that provide detailed maps and information for each event. These sources will provide the most accurate and up-to-date information on the path of totality for a given solar eclipse.

Here are several resources available for finding the path of totality for a solar eclipse:

  1. NASA’s Eclipse Website: NASA provides detailed information, maps, and interactive tools for upcoming solar eclipses. Their website, eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov, is a reliable source for finding the path of totality.
  2. Timeanddate.com: This website offers a solar eclipse calculator that provides information on upcoming eclipses, including the path of totality. It also provides maps and other useful information for planning your eclipse viewing.
  3. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC): RASC’s website, RASC.ca, provides information on upcoming solar eclipses, including the path of totality. They also offer resources and tips for observing and photographing eclipses.
  4. Eclipse-chasers.com: This website is dedicated to eclipse chasing and provides information on upcoming eclipses, including the path of totality. It also offers resources and tips for planning your eclipse viewing.
  5. Mobile Apps: There are several mobile apps available for tracking and predicting solar eclipses. Some popular ones include Eclipse Safari, Solar Eclipse Timer, and Solar Eclipse by Redshift.

It’s important to note that the path of totality can change slightly as new data becomes available, so it’s always a good idea to check multiple sources and stay updated as the eclipse approaches.

Here is a list of solar eclipses for 2024:

  • April 8: Total Solar Eclipse (Path of totality crosses Mexico, the United States, and Canada).   Accord to the National Park Service,” the path of totality will cross over 27 park units as it makes its way across Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.”
Accuweather
  • October 2:  Annular Solar Eclipse (Path of annularity crosses parts of the United States, including California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Texas).  According NASA, the path of totality “continues from Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.”
Accuweather

Please note that the path of totality or annularity for each eclipse may cross different regions or countries. It is always recommended to consult reliable sources such as NASA’s Eclipse Website or timeanddate.com for more detailed information, including the exact path of totality or annularity for each eclipse.

If you are thinking about visiting a location on the path of totality, there are a few things to keep in mind.  First, do your research on the site and the surrounding communities.  Check the state and national park websites for a calendar of events, which may include talks, interpretative guides  and programs.  There may be events and activities for the eclipse.  These locations expect a high volume of activity and there may be limited access and parking to deal with along with scarce accommodations.  Book your accommodations as soon as possible and we aware that campgrounds may have a limit as to how many people you may have with you.  There will also be high volumes of traffic in and out of those areas, leave no trace.  Parks will require you to clean up after yourselves, in order to protect natural resources and so that everyone can enjoy it.  Finally, be safe.  Make sure you have a solar eclipse viewer or eclipse glasses that are approved.  There are NASA approved eyeware available on Amazon.

I was curious about transportation from the airport to the resort after reviewing my confirmation information.  I found that it was a 45 minute drive.  Public transportation in Grand Cayman primarily consists of buses and taxis. Uber and Lyft have been banned by the government so that there is no competition to the taxi system.  I usually find those regulations can cause an uptick in pricing so I looked into car rentals which are conveniently located near the air port and are a fraction of the cost of taxis and more reliable that the bus system.

The public bus system in Grand Cayman is operated by the Cayman Islands Public Transport Board. Buses are color-coded based on their routes: blue for West Bay, green for George Town, and red for Bodden Town/East End/North Side. The buses are generally safe, reliable, and affordable. They operate from early morning until late evening, with reduced service on Sundays and public holidays. Bus stops are located throughout the island, and you can flag down a bus anywhere along its route. Fare payment is made in cash, and exact change is required.

Taxis are readily available in Grand Cayman and can be found at the airport, hotels, and popular tourist areas. Taxis are metered, and rates are set by the government. It is always a good idea to confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey. Taxis can also be hired for island tours or private transportation.

It’s worth noting that Grand Cayman is a relatively small island, and many popular tourist areas are within walking distance of each other. Additionally, some hotels and resorts offer shuttle services for their guests. Renting a car is also a popular option for exploring the island at your own pace.

While public transportation options are available in Grand Cayman, they may not be as extensive or frequent as in larger cities. It is advisable to plan your transportation needs in advance and consider the specific requirements of your itinerary.

These are few of my consideration, when planning my time on the Island.  My hope is to get some much needed down time and have a lovely time with one of my besties.  Enjoy!
