I truly wanted to go to Cuba for my birthday this year.  We had a group of friends that wanted to and my kids were on board.  My kids really wanted to see the country of their grandparents.  I still have my Mom’s address book and I wanted to take copies so we could visit the families residential locations.  I would have loved to find the department stire windows where my parents met and the cemetery were some of my family is laid to rest.

The dream came tumbling down when I saw how difficult it can be to get to Cuba.  Americans can travel to Cuba but not as tourists and there are several considerations before embarking on a trip to Cuba.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that the situation regarding travel to Cuba can change, so it’s always a good idea to check for the most up-to-date information from official sources such as the U.S. Department of State or the Cuban Embassy.

Currently, Americans can travel to Cuba under specific categories, including family visits, official government business, journalistic activity, professional research, educational activities, religious activities, public performances, sports competitions, and humanitarian projects. These categories allow for different types of travel with various requirements, so determining which category applies to your situation is essential.  Here are all the reasons that allow travel to Cuba:

Travel from the US to Cuba is limited.  American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, jetBlue, and United are the only airlines that I could find that travel to Cuba.  There only a few airports that eligible U.S citizens traveling to Cuba can find non-stop service from the following airports:

• John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), New York
• Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), New Jersey
• Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Texas
• Tampa International Airport (TPA), Florida
• Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Florida
• Miami International Airport (MIA), Florida

If you are eligible to travel under one of these categories, you will need to plan your trip accordingly. This may involve getting the necessary documentation, such as a visa or permit, and making arrangements for accommodations and transportation. Additionally, you will likely need to keep records and follow certain guidelines during your stay in Cuba.

As of my knowledge up to July 11, 2023, here are some general travel requirements for visiting Cuba. Please note that travel requirements can change, so it’s always a good idea to consult official sources or contact the Cuban embassy for the most up-to-date information.

1. Visa: Most travelers will need a tourist visa, also known as a tourist card or Cuban visa, to enter Cuba. You can usually obtain this card through travel agencies, airlines, or the Cuban embassy/consulate in your country. Make sure to check if your nationality is eligible for visa exemption or if you need to apply in advance.

2. Passport: Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Cuba.

3. Health Insurance: All visitors are required to have travel health insurance that covers medical expenses during their stay in Cuba. This can be obtained either through a travel insurance policy or by purchasing a Cuban health insurance policy upon arrival.

4. COVID-19 Requirements: As of May 12, 2023, the Administration will end the COVID-19 vaccine requirements for international air travelers.  Starting at 12:01 a.m. on May 12, 2023, noncitizen nonimmigrant air passengers will no longer need to show proof of being fully vaccinated with an accepted COVID-19 vaccine to board a flight to the United States.

5. Currency: Cuba has a specific currency system where tourists generally use the convertible Cuban Peso (CUC) or the Cuban Peso (CUP). It’s recommended to bring some cash with you, as credit and debit cards issued outside of Cuba might not be widely accepted.

It’s also important to note that financial transactions can be a bit more complex when traveling to Cuba, as there are restrictions on the use of U.S. credit and debit cards. Therefore, it’s advisable to have cash on hand, either in U.S. dollars or euros, to cover your expenses during your stay.

There are insurance requitments for traveing to Cuba.  Squaremouth recommends travelers visiting Cuba buy a travel insurance policy with at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage, and at least $100,000 in Medical Evacuation & Repatriation coverage. The National Arboretum is a 446-acre botanical garden and research facility located in Washington, D.C. Here are some details about the National Arboretum:

My SO, the pups, and I went to visit this spot on the advice of my daughter.  We arrived an hour before my daughter and began our tour with the herb garden. It was so incredibly beautiful.  It was nicely laid out well maintained and I loved the different types of garden displays.  Some of the gardens were groups in culinary, medicinal, regional, and other types.  Chiko and I loved our trot through it. 

While we waited, we toured some of the gardens.  Right across from the herb garden are the Japanese gardens.  It was a beautiful walk through which viewed over a wall since the boys weren’t allowed in.  A beautiful koi wraps around the museum center and house some impressive koi. I believe some of these were larger than my 8-pound little buddy.  I think he knew because after looking skeptically at the fish, he trotted around me to stand behind me.  wise choice, I think.

We loved every minute of our walk through it the herb garden and immediately, called my daughter and suggested that we picnic there. She put together a picnic and joined us about an hour later.  We found a lovely spot and enjoyed a charcuterie board and fruit.  It was the perfect day for a picnic.  We were near the children’s interactive garden and some walking trails.  It made for lovely people and nature watching.

This was also her first time there, even though she’s lived in the area for about 10 years. After lunch, we jumped into my Jeep and toured the grounds. Each garden was prettier than the last and at one point you are able to see past the woods towards the hills and greenery of Virginia.  I lost sight of the city just being there.  Even though it was my first time there, not be the last.  I am anxious to see it in the fall and winter.  You have time while you are in DC and want some time away from the hustle and bustle, grab so lunch and getaway to this treasure.  I cannot say enough nice things about teh National Arboretum.  Go!  It is worth the time.

I spent the weekend in Cape May for my birthday.  before the trip, I spent some time thinking about where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do.  My first choice was the Hershey Spa and Hotel but they were fully booked and other than the spa, there is little to do that time of year.  I also thought about New York, but then eliminated that option because I was looking for something more peaceful.  So, Cape May it was! Cape May has several spas that offer a variety of services and treatments to help visitors relax and rejuvenate. I took some time to check out the different spa and package and called a few for appointments.  I enjoyed the customer service I received from the Sea Spa at the Congress Hotel and choose that as the destination.  Here are some of the spas in Cape May that I considered:

1. The Well Center for Massage: This spa offers a variety of massage services, including Swedish, deep tissue, and hot stone massages. They also offer reflexology, aromatherapy, and other treatments.

2. Sea Spa: Located at Congress Hall, this spa offers a variety of services, including massages, facials, and body treatments. They also have a sauna, steam room, and indoor pool.

3. Cape May Day Spa: This spa offers a variety of services, including massages, facials, and body treatments. They also have a hair salon and offer bridal packages.

4. The Salt Cave: This spa offers halotherapy, which involves breathing in salt-infused air to help with respiratory and skin conditions. They also offer massages, facials, and other treatments.

5. The Red Door Salon & Spa: Located at the Icona Cape May hotel, this spa offers a variety of services, including massages, facials, and body treatments. They also have a hair salon and offer bridal packages.

The Sea Spa at Congress Hall is a luxurious spa located in the historic Congress Hall hotel in Cape May, New Jersey. Here are some of the features and services offered at the Sea Spa:

1. Services: The Sea Spa offers a variety of services, including massages, facials, body treatments, and nail services. They also offer packages for couples, brides, and groups.

2. Amenities: The spa features a sauna, steam room, and indoor pool, as well as a relaxation room with a fireplace and comfortable seating. Guests can also enjoy complimentary tea, water, and snacks.

3. Products: The Sea Spa uses high-quality products from brands like Eminence Organic Skin Care and Farmhouse Fresh. They also offer a selection of products for purchase.

I truly enjoyed my experience at the Sea Spa. It was exactly what I needed to give me the time to contemplate the upcoming year. I chose the full body scrub treatment. The treatment starts out with a light brushing to exfoliate the skin, then the aesthetician scrubbed with the most delightful scented product, and then, after it was all taken off, there was a lovely lotion applied. I chose a quiet appointment with soft music to help me drift to where I needed to drift.  I can’t say enough nice things about not only my treatment, but how I was treated.

What I really enjoyed about Sea Spa were the other amenities they had offered. They had a beautiful bathroom with a complement a product that you may have forgotten to bring with you, like, deodorant, razors, hairspray, and other things. There were lockers, a dressing areas and spa showers.  I choose not to shower, because I did not want to wash away my treatment, and really didn’t need to because I found that it has soaked in so wonderfully in to my skin.  After dressing, I went to the lounge and had a cup of tea and read while I waited. It is exactly what I craved.

After, our spa time was over, we meandered to the Washington Street shopping area, where we found Quincy’s Original Lobster Rolls.  This is a small place in the shopping area with a big flavor.  The menu is skewed towards lobster.  I love this kind of menu because they do one thing and they do it right.  To be frank with you, I had a bite of their bread which was very good but my focus was on the lobster.  It was sweat, fresh and meaty.  Quincy’s doesn’t rely on flakes but chunks of lobster meat.  My roll had a claw.  This was one of the best of the  lobster rolls I have had.  If you are nearby, this is a must go.

1. Menu: Quincy’s offers a variety of lobster rolls, including the classic Maine-style roll with butter and lemon, as well as a Connecticut-style roll with warm butter and a touch of paprika. They also offer a lobster BLT roll and a lobster grilled cheese.

Quincy’s Original Lobster Rolls is a must-visit for seafood lovers in Cape May. With fresh, locally sourced lobster and a variety of delicious rolls to choose from, it’s no wonder they have become a popular.  We found that it definitely lived up to the hype.  We had a regular lobster roll.  The meat was fresh, juicy and well proportioned.  There was a huge lobster claw and the meat wasn’t flaked.  To tell you the truth, I only took a bite of the bread because I was concentrated on the beautiful lobster that Quincy’s serves.

Another spot we choose was The Lobster House.  We made reservation on our way into Cape May.  We encountered quiet a bit of traffic leaving Philadelphia and wanted to stop before we checked into the hotel for the night.  We knew that we we went to the hotel first, we wouldn’t go out.  We managed a reservation and were thrilled when we arrived.

The Lobster House is a popular seafood restaurant and market located a bit out of the main tourist area in Cape May. Here are some details about The Lobster House:

1. History: The Lobster House was founded in 1954 by the Dougherty family, who had been in the seafood business for generations (they have a restaurant in Atlantic City, which is excellent!). The restaurant has since become a Cape May institution, known for its fresh seafood and nautical decor.

2. Menu: The Lobster House offers a variety of seafood dishes, including lobster, crab, shrimp, and fish. They also have a raw bar and sushi. In addition to the restaurant, they also have a take-out market that offers fresh seafood, soups, and other items.  They have their own oyster from which they source thier oyster.

The restaurant has several dining rooms, including a casual outdoor patio and a more formal dining room with white tablecloths and a fireplace.  It is older in appearance and more than likley has not been updated in years.

4. Events: The Lobster House hosts several events throughout the year, including a seafood festival in June and a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in December. They also offer private event spaces for weddings, parties, and other occasions.

5. Reviews: The Lobster House has received rave reviews from customers, who praise the fresh seafood, friendly service, and charming atmosphere. They have been featured in several local and national publications, including Travel + Leisure and Food Network.

Overall, The Lobster House is a must-visit for seafood lovers in Cape May. The oysters were phenomenal and the best any of us have ever eaten.  I could go on and on in detail, but it’s not everyne’s cup of tea.  They were plump, briny, and perfect.  I truly enjoyed the mild flavor.  Next, was the clam chowder which was not to my taste.  I felt that it was too vinegary and thin.  Next time, I think I will go with more oysters.

The seafood platters were good.  I much prefer something simple and  less fussy.  I chose the Schooner Dinner, which is one-pound lobster, cherrystone clams, scallops, shrimp, and mussels served in a kettle.  I liked it because it was steamed, but didn’t care for the scallops because I found them a little rubbery.  The rest was good and well steamed.  The service was very good, too.  All-in-all, a 7.4 out of 10.

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail

He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way–and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Even as de Botton takes the reader along on his own peregrinations, he also cites such distinguished fellow-travelers as Baudelaire, Wordsworth, Van Gogh, the biologist Alexander von Humboldt, and the 18th-century eccentric Xavier de Maistre, who catalogued the wonders of his bedroom. The Art of Travel is a “refreshing and profoundly readable” book (The Philadelphia Inquirer). Don’t leave home without it.

GREAT SUMMER READS

I’m a huge fan of reading.  I try to read 60-70 books a year with my favorite genres being Sci-Fi and Fantasy, although I do enjoy branching out into other genres like Historical Non-Fiction. I am searching for some new books to read and anxiously awaiting the sequels to a couple of my favorite series.

I am a fan of Jodi Taylor and Naomi Novak.  Jodi Taylor is an English fantasy writer that send historians into the past with almost near disastrous yet hysterical results.  The characters of St. Mary’s  “investigate major historical events in contemporary time” and just don’t call it time travel.  The 14th installment of The Chronicles of St. Mary’s is due in June.  Naomi Novak is an award-winning American author known for her fantasy and speculative fantasy writing.  I have several of her books and am looking forward to finishing the Scolomance theory where magic is deadly and high school graduation is not guaranteed.

I am constantly looking for new gift ideas for the SO.  Like many people, we have downsized and are fortunate not have a lot of needs (except travel, in my case).  So, what do you give someone that doesn’t need anything?  I am constantly telling family and friends I want the gift of time.  I want their time and spend it having a wonderful time.

Something that I have recently come across is called mystery travel.  Mystery travel is when you hire a company to set up your whole trip for you and doesn’t let you know until right before the trip begins.  The company considers how far you want to travel from home, how much you want to spend and what you like to do.

These companies do all the work and send you the plans around a week ahead of time and you must open it just before you leave.  The company tells you what to pack and what the weather is like.  One of the best parts is if you are not traveling in a car, they will let you know how you will be traveling and when to get to the that mode of transportation.  They will also make sure that you know what documents you need.  I love this idea.

I know someone who recently did this. He and his wife tried this based on a recommendation from one of his clients. They went through Pack Up Go. This group heralds itself as a champion of the overlooked backyard experiences whether it is by train, plane, or automobile.  Pack Up Go took into consideration their budget and how far they wanted to travel along with what their interests were. They received their envelope a week before and opened it the morning of.

According to Pack Up Go’s website, the adventure starts with a bit of pre-planning by the traveler.  They are looking for the following information:

The best part was the anticipation and the mystery.  We tried to guess where they were going because it was a 5-hour drive and the weather. We guessed Connecticut, Maryland, DC, and New York State.  We were wrong.  They ended up in Charlottesville, Virginia.  They absolutely loved the trip because it had an itinerary filled with ideas for breweries and hiking.  It was somewhere new for them.  Not only did they recommend the trip but loved the fact that they didn’t need to do any planning and it was tailor-made for them.

Even though the trip came with an itinerary, Pack Up Go provided several other options for this couple.  Charlottsville is the presidential homes  Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe.  There are also wineries, Luray Caverns, fishing, museums, interactive glass art, and a lot more.  This is a beautiful area and they made the most of it.

I am looking into this as a Christmas present for the SO this year.  We like exploring and I like the idea of having someone else do the planning and see what they come up with for us.  I will have several months to dig into what he might be interested in doing so I can set this up. Trips start at $1,500 for a three-day domestic journey. You can also purchase a gift certificate, if you know someone who could use a little more spontaneity in their lives.

Black Tomato
Do you have deep pockets and a lust for adventure? On their Get Lost Tours, which begin at $30,000, Black Tomato drops you in the middle of nowhere and you have to find your way out. A wilderness survival class is given beforehand, and prior to your trip, they give you advice on how to prepare mentally and physically. Choose between polar, jungle, coastal, desert, or mountain environments or have someone choose for you.

Rustic Pathways Mystery Trips
Surprises aren’t just for grown-ups (though we could probably use them more than the kiddos). Rustic Pathways is a youth-focused travel company fostering global citizenship for middle school, high school, gap year, and college students. Sign up for their 18-day mystery trip for $7,145 plus airfare, and be sent a Patagonia duffel with clues along with a packing list a month in advance. Each day on the trip is a mystery as well, with clues to decipher as a group about the day’s itinerary.

Whym
Get it? Traveling on a “whym.” And this company really does leave it to the last minute—you’ll find out where you’re going by text two to three hours before takeoff. The itinerary is peppered with even more surprises, from sporting events to horseback riding, depending on your budget, and trip options spanning solo flights to group road trips around the US and its territories.

Blind Experiences
Looking for an impressive and sustainable luxury surprise? Depending on your preferences, this Rome-based travel company will send you everywhere from glamping in the Galapagos to a 1920s safari camp in Kenya. The company’s roots are in planning honeymoons, but itineraries can be planned for families, groups, and a new child-adult bonding “legacy” trip at places like the Treehotel in Swedish Lapland or a secret pod in the Swiss Alps. Fun for the whole family.

Back in December, reported that Machu Picchu was closed due to civil arrest in Peru. In a travel advisory in late December, the United States Department of State warned against visiting Peru, telling Americans to “reconsider travel” to the country and “exercise increased caution due to civil unrest.  ”The Incan city and site were closed down for the unforeseeable future.  According to the Associated Press (AP), “agreements were made between authorities, social groups and the local tourism industry” to ensure the safety of the historic site—and the transportation services that tourists use to access it.

Now, as of the February 11th, Machu Picchu’s website is open for buying tickets for the city and tickets are available for the Inca rail and Peruvian train service. As of February 15, the sites will be open. Please be aware that closures can recur.  If  you are traveling to Peru, will need to be very flexible, especially since March is the beginning of their busy tourist season.

Likewise, it is communicated that all the facilities will be provided to national and foreign tourists who are affected for the use of the tickets, from January 21, 2023, until one month after the conclusion of the social mobilizations or request the return of the amount of the ticket
